Woman Charged with Assault in Ajax Library Incident

A 25-year-old woman has been charged with two counts of Assault with a Weapon following an incident at the Ajax Public Library. According to the Durham Region Police Service, the event happened on Saturday, March 22, 2025. The suspect reportedly attacked a woman who was studying in the library, hurling objects at her and trying to remove her hijab. The police stated that the suspect poured an unknown liquid on the hijab and attempted to ignite it with a lighter before security staff intervened.

The suspect fled the scene but was later located and arrested by officers without incident. She is facing additional charges for Failing to Comply with a Probation Order, with a total of three counts. The individual is currently under custody, awaiting a bail hearing.

The investigation is still ongoing, and authorities are working with the Crown Attorney's office to explore the possibility of hate as a motivation behind the attack.
