West Nile Virus Detected in Mosquitoes in Ajax and Pickering: Health Advice Issued

The Durham Region Health Department has reported that mosquitoes in Ajax and Pickering have tested positive for the West Nile virus. This detection raises concerns for residents in these municipalities and surrounding areas.

Health officials advise residents to take precautions to minimize the risk of mosquito bites and potential infection. Recommended measures include:

  • Use insect repellent: Apply repellent containing DEET or other approved ingredients when outdoors, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Wear protective clothing: Long sleeves and pants can help reduce skin exposure to mosquitoes.
  • Eliminate standing water: Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, so residents should regularly check their properties for and remove any sources of standing water, such as bird baths, clogged gutters, and containers.
  • Maintain screens: Ensure that windows and doors have tight-fitting screens to keep mosquitoes out of homes.

The Health Department continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and take appropriate actions to protect themselves and their families from mosquito-borne illnesses.
