Statistics Canada Reports on University Teaching Staff Salaries for 2023/2024
Statistics Canada has released data on full-time teaching staff at Canadian universities for the academic year 2023/2024. The report indicates that there were 48,960 full-time teachers at Canadian universities during this period. Of these, 48.5% were professors at one of the 15 leading research universities that are part of U15 Canada, an association of universities that receive significant federal research funding.
The median salary for full-time teachers across all academic ranks was $151,700, marking a 3.9% increase from the previous year and an 11.9% increase over five years. This rise is attributed to negotiated wage gains. The report highlights a salary disparity between professors at U15 member universities and those at non-member institutions. The median salary for professors at U15 universities was $164,750, compared to $139,550 at other universities.
The data also reveals gender-based salary differences. In 2023/2024, female full professors earned 95.8% of what their male counterparts earned. This gender wage ratio has shown little variation over the past decade.
Some data for the report were estimated due to incomplete submissions from certain institutions. These estimates will be updated once final data is available.
