Statistics Canada Reports on Journeypersons' Income and Mobility Trends

According to Statistics Canada, the median employment income for newly certified journeypersons in Canada was $56,580 in 2022, reflecting a 1.0% rise from the previous year. Despite this increase, certain trades such as early childhood educators and ironworkers reported income levels that have not returned to pre-pandemic standards.

The removal of travel restrictions contributed to a rise in interprovincial mobility among journeypersons for the first time since 2013. Statistics Canada noted that 5.8% of these workers were residing or working outside of the province in which they were certified. Popular destinations among journeypersons included British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario, with British Columbia experiencing the largest net inflow.

These figures illustrate the evolving trends in mobility and income among Canada's trades professionals, highlighting both progress and ongoing challenges in specific sectors.
