Speed Limit on Brock Street in Whitby to be Reduced to 40 km/h

The Regional Municipality of Durham will reduce the speed limit on Brock Street in Whitby to 40 km/h. This change is part of the Durham Vision Zero initiative and is being implemented in collaboration with the Town of Whitby. The affected area is Brock Street from Victoria Street to Water Street.

The new speed limit signs are expected to be installed before September 3, 2024, although the schedule may be affected by weather conditions. The goal of the speed limit reduction is to enhance safety for all road users.

Aggressive driving, including speeding, has been identified as a significant issue in Durham’s Vision Zero Strategic Road Safety Action Plan. Speed is a contributing factor in approximately one-third of fatal collisions in Canada. Lowering speed limits is considered one of the most effective ways to reduce the frequency and severity of collisions.

All regional roads posted with a 40 km/h speed limit will also be designated as community safety zones, allowing for the use of automated speed enforcement (ASE). The ASE program captures images of vehicles exceeding the speed limit, which are then reviewed by a Provincial Offences Act Officer. If warranted, a notice of the offence is sent to the vehicle's registered owner within 30 days, without issuing demerit points.
