Shaw House Reopens as Clarington Emergency Services Headquarters
The Shaw House, a heritage building located in Bowmanville, has reopened following renovations. It will now serve as the administrative headquarters for Clarington Emergency and Fire Services. The building, originally constructed around 1890, underwent renovations starting in December 2022 to improve accessibility, including the installation of an elevator and an accessible washroom.
The reopening ceremony was attended by Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster, members of the Clarington Council, and Todd McCarthy, Member of Provincial Parliament for Durham. The project received $300,000 in funding from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program – COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream, which is supported by both federal and provincial governments.
The Shaw House, which was rebuilt after a fire in 1888, was purchased by the Region of Durham in 1975 and served as a child care centre until 2019. It was then acquired by the Municipality of Clarington and designated a heritage property. The renovations aimed to preserve the building's historical significance while adapting it for modern use.
