Request for Amendment to Property Standards By-law to Prevent Feeding of Wild Animals

At the General Government Committee meeting held on November 6, 2023, Mark Rottine presented a delegation regarding a request for an amendment to the property standards by-law aimed at preventing the overfeeding of wild animals in Clarington. Rottine expressed concerns about a neighboring property owner who has been overfeeding various wild animals, including feral cats, squirrels, and raccoons, in a high-density residential area. He reported that approximately 300 rats have been caught in the vicinity, raising concerns about potential health hazards associated with the increased wildlife population. Rottine noted that the City of Toronto, along with several other regions, has implemented bylaws to address the issue of overfeeding wild animals. He requested that Clarington consider enacting a similar by-law. Following the presentation, the committee moved to refer the request to staff for a report back.
