Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Pickering, Oshawa, and the Southern Durham Region. Rain, at times heavy, is expected to continue through Sunday. The ground is already near saturation and has little ability to absorb further rainfall.

Hazards:

  • Additional rainfall amounts of 30 to 60 mm.
  • Rainfall rates of up to 50 mm in an hour.

Timing:

  • Continuing tonight through Sunday.

Discussion:

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue tonight through Sunday. Extremely heavy rain fell this afternoon, surpassing 100 mm over a few locations. Additional rainfall is expected to result in further impacts tonight and Sunday. A slight lull in showers and thunderstorms is expected overnight before strengthening Sunday with daytime heating intensifying thunderstorms. This weather pattern typically brings rapidly changing conditions between sunny skies and heavy downpours. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to taper to isolated showers Monday morning.

For information concerning flooding, residents are advised to consult their local Conservation Authority or Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry office. Visit Ontario.ca/floods for the latest details.

Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Avoid driving through water on roads. Even shallow, fast-moving water across a road can sweep a vehicle or a person away. Do not approach washouts near rivers, creeks, and culverts. Keep children and pets away from creeks and river banks. Consider moving valuable items to higher levels.

Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. Severe weather can be reported by sending an email to ONstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweeting reports using #ONStorm.
