Public Health Recommendations After Heavy Rainfall

The Durham Region Health Department advises the public to refrain from swimming in beach water for at least 48 hours following heavy rainfall. This recommendation is based on the potential for increased bacteria levels in the water due to runoff. Elevated levels of E. coli, which can exceed the provincial standard of 200 E. coli per 100 ml of water, pose health risks to swimmers. The Health Department conducts regular bacteriological water tests throughout the summer to monitor water safety at local beaches.
