Proposal for Comprehensive Sign Plan on Clarington Waterfront Trail

During the General Government Committee meeting on June 6, 2022, a proposal was made to engage a consultant for a comprehensive sign plan for the multi-use path on the Clarington Waterfront Trail. The resolution, moved by Councillor Zwart and seconded by Mayor Foster, highlighted that the Waterfront Trail is heavily utilized by both pedestrians and cyclists, including e-bikes, which travel at higher speeds than pedestrians. It was noted that the addition of signs on multi-use paths has been shown to improve safety in other municipalities. The proposed signage includes messages such as 'Slow down – 15km max', 'Walk Right – Pass Left', 'Bikes give way to Pedestrians', 'Share the Trail', and 'Caution – popular section ahead'. Staff indicated that the design and execution of a comprehensive sign plan were not included in the 2022 budget, and staff resources were allocated to other projects. The estimated cost for the design and purchase of signage is between $15,000 and $20,000, to be funded from the Tax Rate Stabilization Fund. The resolution was referred to the Clarington Active Transportation and Safe Roads Advisory Committee for further consideration.
