Pickering Lands to Be Transferred to Parks Canada, Not Used for Airport

The Canadian government has decided that the Pickering Lands in Ontario will not be developed into an airport. This announcement was made by the Minister of Transport and Internal Trade, Anita Anand. The lands, originally acquired in 1972 for the purpose of constructing a new airport, will instead be transferred to Parks Canada.

Spanning 75 square kilometers, the Pickering Lands have been under consideration for various uses over the years. The government plans to conduct a formal consultation process to explore future uses for the lands, involving community members and stakeholders in the discussions.

Minister Anand stated that the government has concluded that an airport is not the optimal use for the Pickering Lands. This decision follows engagement with local communities and reflects the government's current priorities for land use.

The announcement marks a significant change in the intended use of the Pickering Lands, with a focus on conservation and community involvement in future planning.
