Overview of Durham Health Department’s Beach Monitoring Program

The Durham Region Health Department conducts a beach monitoring program to ensure the safety of swimming areas throughout the summer. This program involves regular bacteriological water tests to assess water quality at local beaches. Water samples are collected and tested by the Public Health Ontario Laboratory located in Peterborough. The results of these tests are made available to the public and media by Friday of each week, which aids in timely public notifications regarding beach safety. Beaches are deemed unsafe for swimming when E. coli levels exceed the provincial standard of 200 E. coli per 100 ml of water. The Health Department also advises the public to refrain from swimming for at least 48 hours following heavy rainfall, as runoff can elevate bacteria levels in the water. Additionally, the Health Department provides real-time inspection results through its online disclosure portal, Check&Go! Durham, to keep the community informed about beach conditions.
