Oshawa Man Charged in 2018 Sexual Assault Case
A 32-year-old man from Oshawa has been charged with sexual assault following an investigation that began in 2018. The Durham Regional Police Service's Special Victims Unit concluded the investigation on November 14, 2024. The incident occurred when a female victim was leaving a bar in downtown Whitby and accepted a ride from the suspect. The suspect drove her to an empty parking lot where the assault took place before dropping her off near a convenience store in Courtice.
In 2024, new evidence led investigators to the suspect, who was subsequently arrested. The accused, Sopan Pusparajah, faces charges of sexual assault and was held for a bail hearing. Police have released a photo of the suspect, believing there may be additional victims.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Detective Constable Jiggins of the Special Victims Unit. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers, with eligibility for a cash reward.
The allegations have not yet been proven in court.
