Orono Library Designated as a Historical Property

The Municipality of Clarington has officially designated the Orono Library, located at 127 Church Street North, as a property of historical and architectural significance. This decision was made under Part IV Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act. The designation aims to preserve the library's historical elements and its Italianate architectural style, which dates back to its construction in 1882.

Residents have until November 7, 2024, to appeal this designation to the Ontario Land Tribunal. Appeals must be submitted through the Tribunal's e-file service or by mail, accompanied by a fee of $1,100. The appeal must include reasons for the objection.

The Clarington Heritage Committee had previously evaluated the library and recommended its designation due to its cultural heritage value. Recent upgrades to the library, including accessibility improvements, were completed in collaboration with Clarington Library, Museums & Archives staff.

The designation is part of Clarington's efforts to preserve local landmarks and maintain the historical character of the area as the municipality continues to grow.
