Ontario's Employment Sees Modest Growth in February 2025

Statistics Canada's Labour Force Survey for February 2025 reports that employment in Ontario rose by 0.2%, with a total of 8,257,000 individuals employed in the province. The unemployment rate in Ontario dropped by 0.3 percentage points to reach 7.3%.

On a national level, the unemployment rate in Canada remained unchanged at 6.6%. The survey noted a decrease in employment among those aged 55 and older, with a decrease of 21,000 positions, predominantly affecting women in this age group.

Employment increased among women aged 25 to 54, with a gain of 27,000 jobs, representing a 0.4% rise. However, total actual hours worked in February witnessed a decline of 1.3%. This was the largest monthly decrease since April 2022 and was predominantly influenced by snowstorm occurrences in Central and Eastern Canada.

The survey provides a detailed view of employment shifts within Ontario and across the country, highlighting demographic variances and geographical impacts due to external factors.
