Ontario Sees Increase in Measles Cases as Health Officials Advocate Vaccination

The Chief Medical Officer of Health has reported an increase in measles cases in Ontario, noting a total of 350 infections since 2024, with 173 new cases recently identified. Among these, 31 cases have required hospital treatment. Data indicates that over 96% of these cases involve individuals who are unimmunized or whose immunization status is unknown, with a concentration observed in unvaccinated groups in Southwestern Ontario.

Health authorities emphasize the importance of vaccination, specifically the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, which is described as both safe and effective, having been in widespread use for over 50 years. Officials state that a full course of the MMR vaccine offers nearly complete protection against measles.

Residents are advised to check their vaccination records and ensure they are up-to-date to help reduce the risk of further spread of the disease. This call to action is based on information provided by public health sources.
