Ontario Proposes New Supports for Women and Families in Trades
The Ontario government has announced plans to introduce legislation aimed at supporting women and families in the skilled trades sector. The proposed legislation includes a new job-protected parental leave for adoptive parents and those using surrogacy, as well as a 27-week leave for workers with serious illnesses. Additionally, the government intends to mandate properly fitting personal protective equipment (PPE) for women across all trades sectors.
The proposed 16-week parental leave under the Employment Standards Act is designed to align with upcoming federal changes to employment insurance benefits for adoption. The 27-week leave for serious illnesses would be one of the longest in Canada, allowing workers to recover without the risk of losing their jobs.
These initiatives are part of a broader effort to increase the participation of women in the trades by ensuring workplace safety and inclusivity. The government is also proposing measures to improve workplace conditions, such as clean washrooms and accountability for washroom maintenance.
These legislative changes are part of a series of actions under the Working for Workers Act, aimed at growing Ontario's workforce and supporting worker wellbeing.
