Ontario Plans Expansion of Seniors Active Living Centres
The Ontario government has announced plans to increase funding for Seniors Active Living Centres (SALCs) by $17 million over the next three years. This funding aims to expand the number of SALCs from 316 to 416 across the province, enhancing access to services for seniors and individuals with disabilities in underserved communities.
The expansion was outlined in the 2024 Fall Economic Statement, with a call for proposals launched in July 2024. Successful applicants for new SALC programs will be announced starting in early 2025. The funding will allow SALC programs to request up to $55,000 for maintenance and operating costs, an increase from the previous maximum of $50,000 in 2024.
Changes to the Seniors Active Living Centres Act, 2017, effective June 1, 2024, now allow more types of organizations, such as municipalities, non-profit corporations, registered charities, Indigenous groups, Legions, Lions Clubs, and recreational clubs, to deliver SALC programs.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Ontario government to support the aging population and improve the quality of life for seniors across the province.
