Ontario Launches Welding Program for Youth in Justice System
The Ontario government has announced the launch of a new welding training program at the Sprucedale Youth Centre. This initiative is designed to provide youth in the justice system with skills that are in demand in the workforce. The program is a collaboration with the Canadian Welding Bureau and aims to help participants reintegrate into their communities and reduce the likelihood of re-offending.
Participants in the program will have the opportunity to earn a nationally recognized welding certification. The training includes a workshop where youth can gain practical skills that may lead to further education, trade programs, and employment opportunities. The program is supported by an investment of approximately $148,000 from the Ontario government, along with an $80,000 grant from the Canadian Welding Bureau.
The welding workshop is part of a broader effort to support youth in custody or detention at the Sprucedale Youth Centre. It complements the existing Taking Responsibility and Developing Employable Skills (TRADES) program, which offers access to various skilled trade occupations and industry-standard certifications.
This initiative is part of Ontario's ongoing commitment to provide second chances for those with criminal records, focusing on rehabilitation and reintegration through skills development. The program is also aligned with the province's broader strategy to increase access to skilled trades training and employment opportunities.
