The Ontario government has announced new measures for the upcoming school year, focusing on reducing distractions and promoting a healthier learning environment. Starting September 1, 2024, the province will implement restrictions on cellphone use and a ban on vaping in schools. These measures aim to address concerns about the impact of mobile devices and vaping on students' academic performance, mental health, and physical well-being.

The government is allocating $47.5 million to support these initiatives. This includes $15 million for programs assisting students at risk of substance use, $1 million for School Mental Health Ontario to develop educational resources, and $1.5 million for school boards to collaborate with parent involvement committees on grassroots campaigns. Additionally, $30 million will be provided for vape detectors and security upgrades in schools.

Education Minister Jill Dunlop stated that the restrictions on cellphones are intended to help students focus better on their studies. The new rules are part of a broader effort to modernize the curriculum, which includes new courses in business studies and technological education for Grade 9 and 10 students. The government has also expanded mandatory mental health literacy education in the Grade 10 Career Studies course.

The Ontario government has invested over $3.6 billion in capital construction projects since 2018, resulting in 139 new schools and 109 additions or renovations to existing facilities. This investment is part of a larger $16 billion commitment over 10 years to support school construction, renewal, and improvement.
