Ontario Government Invests in Rural Economic Development Projects

The Ontario government has announced an investment of over $5.7 million in 85 projects aimed at enhancing economic development in rural communities across the province. This funding is part of the Rural Economic Development (RED) program, which supports initiatives that diversify local economies and address challenges related to economic development and the labor force.

Among the funded projects is the Belleville Downtown District Business Improvement Association (BIA), which will receive up to $57,427 to implement a Membership Care Program (MCP). This program aims to connect local businesses with services to tackle challenges and provide necessary training. Additionally, the BIA plans to hold town hall meetings to facilitate communication between businesses and residents.

The Corporation of Prince Edward County is allocated $65,000 for its Workforce Development Training for Community Benefit project. This initiative will focus on developing a community benefits framework to create a skilled local workforce and enhance employment opportunities in the area.

The RED program has committed more than $27.4 million since its inception in 2019, funding a total of 473 projects designed to attract investment and create jobs in rural Ontario. The latest intake for the program closed on February 21, 2024. The Ontario government is also conducting public consultations to inform the development of a new Rural Economic Development Strategy.
