Ontario Government Evaluates New Highway 401 Tunnel Expressway

The Ontario government has initiated a technical evaluation for constructing a new tunnel expressway under Highway 401. This proposed expressway aims to provide a faster route for drivers and transit users, addressing traffic congestion in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). The evaluation will explore various options to increase Highway 401 capacity, including potential routes, number of lanes, and interchanges. The project will also assess the economic impact and review best practices from similar projects. Initial soil testing and environmental assessments are part of the feasibility study. Consultations with First Nations communities will also be conducted. The expressway is not planned to be tolled, consistent with the Get It Done Act, 2024.
