Ontario Explores New Energy Projects to Meet Future Demand
The Ontario government has initiated discussions with Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to explore new energy generation projects at existing sites in Port Hope, Haldimand County, and St. Clair Township. This move is part of a broader effort to address the province's increasing electricity demand, which is projected to rise by 75% by 2050, according to the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). The government plans to add 16,000 megawatts (MW) of new generation capacity by 2050, alongside new transmission infrastructure.
The sites identified for potential development are already zoned for electricity generation and are strategically located near existing transmission lines. The government is engaging with Indigenous, community, and municipal leaders to assess support for various types of energy generation, including nuclear.
