Ontario Corps Launched to Aid in Emergency Response
Premier Doug Ford announced the establishment of Ontario Corps, a volunteer group aimed at assisting communities during emergencies such as natural disasters. The initiative is modeled after AmeriCorps and involves collaboration with non-governmental organizations and First Nations partners. Ontario Corps will provide services including emergency shelter, debris management, and food services. Partner organizations include Feed Ontario, Ontario Search and Rescue Volunteer Association, Salvation Army, GlobalMedic, and Team Rubicon Canada.
The province has allocated resources such as flood mitigation barriers, drones, and water pumps to support these efforts. Equipment and volunteers can be deployed across Ontario within 24 to 72 hours. The initiative is part of a $110 million investment over three years to enhance emergency preparedness.
Earlier this month, Ontario Corps was piloted in Gravenhurst, where partners assisted with wellness checks and food distribution following heavy snowfall. The government plans to establish an Ontario Emergency Preparedness and Response Headquarters in Etobicoke and additional emergency hubs across the province to improve response times and coordination.
