Ontario Allocates Funds for Supportive Housing in Durham
The Ontario government has announced funding for supportive housing projects in the Regional Municipality of Durham. Over $8 million has been allocated through the Social Services Relief Fund, with an additional $3 million provided in partnership with the Government of Canada via the Ontario Priorities Housing Initiative. This funding aims to create 27 transitional housing units in Beaverton and 18 affordable housing units in Whitby.
The Beaverton project, located at 121 Nine Mile Road, will offer transitional housing with access to services such as meals, rental guidance, life skills training, employment services, and mental health support. The Whitby project, at 835 McQuay Boulevard, will feature accessible units designed to eliminate fossil fuel use, along with amenities like a community center and parks.
This initiative is part of Ontario's broader effort to address homelessness and provide long-term housing solutions. The Social Services Relief Fund has provided over $1.2 billion to support municipalities in creating housing solutions for vulnerable populations, including those at risk of homelessness.
