Ontario Allocates $500 Million for GO Transit Coach Refurbishment
The Ontario government has announced an investment of nearly $500 million to refurbish 181 GO Transit bi-level rail coaches at the Alstom plant in Thunder Bay. This refurbishment is part of the province's GO Expansion program, which aims to extend the service life of these coaches by 20 years.
The refurbishment will involve updates such as new seating, doors, flooring, walls, ceilings, upgraded washrooms, updated electrical outlets with USB ports, and new HVAC control systems. According to the Ontario government, this project is expected to sustain and create jobs in Thunder Bay and support local suppliers.
Prabmeet Sarkaria, Ontario's Minister of Transportation, discussed the investment's potential impact on job creation and transit expansion. Ken Boshcoff, Mayor of Thunder Bay, noted the economic benefits for the region.
This project is part of a broader effort to enhance the GO rail network, aiming to improve service and infrastructure for transit users across Ontario.
