Ontario Allocates $350 Million for GO Transit Rail Car Refurbishment
The Ontario government has announced an investment of over $350 million to refurbish 121 GO Transit bi-level rail cars. This refurbishment will be conducted at Ontario Northland's facility located in North Bay. The project is part of a broader initiative to expand services across the GO rail network.
The refurbishment includes updates such as new interior finishings, doors, and HVAC control systems, which are expected to extend the lifespan of the rail coaches by 20 years. The Ontario government states that this project will support manufacturing jobs and contribute to economic growth in northern Ontario.
This refurbishment is a component of the GO Expansion program, which aims to enhance transit services, including providing two-way, all-day service to areas such as Oshawa and Burlington.
Statements from government officials, including Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation, and Vic Fedeli, MPP for Nipissing, emphasize the local economic benefits of the project.
