October 2024 Farm Product Prices Released

Statistics Canada has released the farm product prices for October 2024. The data covers monthly provincial prices for grains, oilseeds, specialty crops, cattle, hogs, poultry, eggs, and dairy products.

  • Canola Prices: In October, canola prices varied across provinces. Saskatchewan saw a 0.5% decline, while Alberta and Manitoba experienced a 0.8% increase. Year-over-year, canola prices decreased significantly, with Ontario experiencing a 24.1% drop.

  • Dry Peas: Prices for dry peas increased in October compared to September, led by an 8.9% rise in Saskatchewan. This was influenced by India's extension of the tariff suspension on yellow peas.

  • Barley: Barley prices showed mixed movements. Ontario reported an 11.2% increase, whereas Prince Edward Island saw a 4.9% decrease.

  • Wheat: Prices for wheat, excluding durum, rose in most provinces, with Ontario leading at a 3.3% increase. This was supported by strong global and domestic demand.

  • Cattle: Slaughter cattle prices fell in all provinces except Quebec, which saw a 0.4% rise. Alberta experienced a 1.4% decrease, marking the fourth consecutive month of decline. Year-over-year, slaughter cattle prices were up by at least 6.8% across all provinces.

  • Hogs: Slaughter hog prices varied, with Nova Scotia, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Ontario seeing decreases. Other provinces reported increases, ranging from 0.2% in New Brunswick to 2.5% in Alberta.

This data provides insights into the agricultural market trends across Canada, reflecting the influence of both domestic and international factors on farm product prices.
