NORAD to Track Santa's Flight on December 24
The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) is set to track Santa Claus on his annual journey on December 24, 2024. This event marks the 69th year of the NORAD Tracks Santa program, which began in 1955. NORAD, a joint organization between Canada and the United States, is tasked with monitoring and defending North American airspace continuously throughout the year.
The program uses NORAD's radar systems to follow Santa's sleigh as it travels globally. The tracking begins with the North Warning System, comprising 47 installations across Canada and Alaska. Once Santa is detected, NORAD employs satellites equipped with infrared sensors to continue tracking his progress.
Volunteers support the NORAD Tracks Santa program by answering phone calls and emails from children and families worldwide, eager to learn Santa's location. Updates are also provided through the program's website and social media platforms.
The Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces have confirmed their participation in the program, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a secure and monitored airspace. This initiative is part of NORAD's broader mission to ensure the safety and security of North American skies.
For those interested in following Santa's journey, updates will be available on the official NORAD Tracks Santa website and through various media outlets.
