Whitby, Ontario – The Regional Municipality of Durham and the Township of Brock will implement a 40 kilometre per hour (km/h) speed limit in Sunderland.
Location:
- River Street (Regional Road 10), from Sunderland Meadows Drive to Highway 7/12.
- Local roads in Sunderland will also have a 40 km/h speed limit unless otherwise posted.
Installation Date:
- Speed limit reduction signs are scheduled for installation on October 2, 2024. Installation may be affected by weather conditions.
Purpose:
- The speed limit reduction is part of Durham's Vision Zero initiative, aimed at improving safety for all road users.
- Speeding is identified as a contributing factor in approximately one-third of fatal collisions in Canada.
Automated Speed Enforcement:
- Roads designated as 40 km/h will also be community safety zones, allowing for automated speed enforcement (ASE).
- ASE captures images of vehicles exceeding the speed limit, with fines issued to the vehicle's registered owner if warranted.
