Local Student Wins Diversity Leadership Bursary

Jenae Heron-Kelly, a Grade 12 student at St. Stephen Catholic Secondary School in Bowmanville, has been awarded the inaugural Diversity Leadership Bursary from the Municipality of Clarington. This bursary, valued at $1,500, is aimed at graduating high school students who engage in activities promoting diversity, inclusion, anti-racism, and accessibility within the community. Jenae's application included a compelling essay reflecting her commitment to fostering positive change in her community. She is actively involved in her school as the leader of the St. Stephen’s Black Student Association, which focuses on raising awareness of Black culture through events such as Black History Month. Her contributions have been recognized through several awards, including the Royal of the Month award and a courage award, along with a certificate for academic achievements. In addition to her leadership roles, Jenae is an artist, dancer, singer, activist, and entrepreneur, and she volunteers at local food banks and shelters. Mayor Adrian Foster expressed pride in presenting the bursary, highlighting the importance of young leaders like Jenae in shaping a more inclusive community. Tenzin Shomar, Chair of Clarington’s Diversity Advisory Committee, noted the strong applications received and wished Jenae success in her future endeavors, anticipating her continued involvement in community initiatives.
