Work on the Highway 401 expansion is scheduled to begin in September 2024. This project will include improvements to the Ganaraska Millennium Trail. The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority (GRCA) will realign the trail by constructing a new boardwalk further north from its current location in the wetland and away from Highway 401. The new alignment aims to minimize the impact on the wetland and permanently re-route the trail loop outside of future highway expansion areas.

Construction on the boardwalk and trail realignment will start the week of August 19, 2024, and is expected to be completed by early fall 2024. During this period, rotating closures will be implemented to allow access to the trail.

As of September 1, 2024, southern access to the Ganaraska Millennium Trail from the Port Hope Hiking Trail will be closed for highway expansion work until at least 2028. The Port Hope Conservation Area will also be closed starting September 1, 2024, to be used for highway expansion staging activities until at least 2028.

The GRCA will provide regular updates and post signage during any required construction closures. Visitors are advised to respect posted signage and avoid areas where construction is underway. For more information, visit the GRCA website or contact them directly.
