Health Canada Reports on 2024 Cannabis Use Survey

Health Canada has released the results of the 2024 Canadian Cannabis Survey, which was conducted from April 4 to July 2, 2024. The survey aims to provide insights into Canadians' knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding cannabis use.

Key findings from the survey include:

  • A decline in the proportion of Canadians who report smoking cannabis, although smoking remains the most common method of consumption at 69%, followed by eating (57%) and vaporizing (37%).

  • An increase in the number of respondents obtaining cannabis from legal sources, rising from 37% in 2019 to 72% in 2024. Legal storefronts have been the most common source since 2019.

  • A decrease in the percentage of individuals who reported driving after cannabis use, from 27% in 2018 to 18% in 2024.

  • Stable rates of cannabis use among youth aged 16-19, with 41% reporting use in the past 12 months.

  • Consistent levels of daily or almost daily cannabis use among respondents since 2018, at approximately 25% overall and 20% among youth.

  • A stable percentage of cannabis users at high risk of developing problems from use, remaining around 3% since 2018.

The survey collected data from 11,666 respondents aged 16 and older across Canada, covering themes such as knowledge, attitudes, cannabis use, sources, and higher-risk use. New topics in the 2024 survey included ease of access from legal and illegal sources and types of edibles consumed.

Health Canada emphasizes the importance of educating youth and young adults about the health risks of cannabis, noting that the brain continues to develop until around age 25. The department has launched several public education campaigns to address these risks.
