Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority Advises on Pumpkin Disposal
The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority (GRCA) has issued guidance on the disposal of Halloween pumpkins. The authority emphasizes the importance of composting pumpkins or donating them to local farms or organizations.
Improper disposal of pumpkins in wooded or rural areas can attract wildlife such as deer, raccoons, and rodents, potentially leading them into hazardous situations near roads or human activity. Additionally, discarded pumpkins can introduce non-native seeds or pathogens, posing a risk to local ecosystems.
The GRCA warns that large piles of decomposing pumpkins can produce mold and bacteria, which may harm native plants and soil. It is illegal to dispose of vegetation or litter in conservation areas, parks, and private properties.
Residents are encouraged to dispose of their pumpkins responsibly to avoid legal issues and protect the environment. For further information, the GRCA can be contacted at 905-885-8173 or via email at info@grca.on.ca.
