Federal Lands Listed for Housing Development

The Government of Canada has announced the availability of five federal properties for housing development. This initiative is part of the new Public Lands for Homes Plan. The announcement was made by Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Public Services and Procurement, and Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities. The plan includes the launch of the Canada Public Land Bank, which currently lists 56 federal properties that can support housing projects. Builders can submit their plans for these properties, which will be available for long-term leasing rather than one-time sales. The aim is to ensure that the properties remain affordable and publicly owned.

The government is also seeking feedback on the land bank and its properties through a secure online platform. This feedback will help inform the development of these properties, including engaging Indigenous Peoples, community organizations, builders, and other housing providers. Additionally, the Canada Lands Company, in partnership with the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, has issued a call for proposals from housing providers to access some of the properties in cities like Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary, Ottawa, and Montréal.
