Endorsed Resolution for Free Public Transportation on Election Days

On June 6, 2022, the General Government Committee of Clarington endorsed a resolution to request the Region of Waterloo to consider implementing free public transportation on election days. This resolution was moved by Councillor Neal and seconded by Councillor Zwart. The resolution highlights a consistent decline in voter turnout for municipal, provincial, and federal elections in Canada, particularly in the Waterloo Region. It notes that many residents face challenges accessing transportation to polling stations due to various factors, including lack of available transportation, physical mobility issues, and socioeconomic status. The resolution aims to generate more attention towards elections and polling station locations, thereby encouraging greater voter participation among residents who might otherwise be unable to vote. The motion was carried unanimously by the committee.
