Durham Regional Police Act in Nationwide 'Project Steel' Operation
During a nationwide law enforcement initiative known as Project Steel, the Durham Region Police Service made significant strides in addressing online child sexual exploitation. The operation, led by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) from February 17 to February 28, 2025, saw active participation across multiple regions, including Durham.
Within the Durham Region, the police executed seven search warrants as part of the operation. These activities resulted in the confiscation of more than 90 electronic devices, pivotal to the investigation. In the process, six victims were identified, eight children were protected, and two individuals were taken into custody.
The operation's execution involved significant contributions from local law enforcement personnel, including A/Deputy Chief Courneyea and D/Cst. Mayhew, along with K9 Pixel. The outcomes were part of a broader strategic effort led by the RCMP to enhance safety measures for children in digital spaces across Canada.
Information regarding the operation's results is sourced from reports by the RCMP.
