Durham Region Transit Commission Presents Rural Service Review

On October 15, 2019, Christopher Norris, Manager of Customer Service Experience, and Bill Holmes, Acting General Manager of the Durham Region Transit Commission, presented a comprehensive review of transit services in Durham's rural areas to the General Government Committee. Mr. Norris outlined three primary objectives for the Rural Service Review: to improve service delivery, enhance customer experience, and leverage new technologies. He discussed various service delivery models employed by peer jurisdictions that could be applicable to Durham's rural transit needs. Public engagement was emphasized, with outreach conducted through online surveys, postcard distributions, and focus groups. Key topics from the public outreach included service frequency, accessibility, and the need for improved communication regarding transit options. The next steps involve integrating the findings into the 2020 budget, with the first phase of the new service model expected to be implemented as part of that budget. The Committee received the presentation with thanks and engaged in a question-and-answer session following the presentation.
