Durham Region Starts West Nile Virus Program for 2025
The Durham Region Health Department has launched the 2025 West Nile virus (WNV) surveillance and control program, starting May 12. This initiative will include activities such as adult mosquito trapping to test for WNV, monitoring larval mosquito populations, and applying larvicide in various locations throughout the region.
A significant update for this year's program involves the move from mail-in forms to an online request system for residents wishing to treat private property with larvicide. This change aims to streamline the application process for participating households.
In 2024, there were 18 reported human cases of West Nile virus and 13 mosquito batches that tested positive for the virus in Durham Region. Health officials continue to advise residents to reduce the risk of infection by eliminating stagnant water around their properties and by using protective clothing and insect repellent during dawn and dusk.
The Health Department underscores the importance of these preventative measures as a crucial part of the community’s response to mitigate the spread of the virus. Further information regarding the larvicide program can be obtained through the Health Department's official website.
