Durham Region Schedules Nuclear Alert System Test for October 29-30

The Region of Durham will conduct its annual test of the nuclear public alerting system on October 29 and 30. This system is intended to notify residents in the event of an emergency at the nuclear-generating stations located in Clarington and Pickering.

The testing will occur during daytime hours over two days:

  • October 29: An automated dialer will call landline phone numbers within a 10-kilometre radius of the nuclear-generating stations in Durham Region. The calls will display the number 905-666-6291.
  • October 30: Outdoor sirens will sound for up to one minute. These sirens are located within three kilometres of the stations and will be audible to individuals outdoors in the vicinity.

Residents can verify how they will be alerted by visiting durham.ca/AlertMap and entering their address. This test requires no action from residents if they receive a call on October 29 or hear the sirens on October 30. In an actual emergency, residents are advised to go indoors and listen to local media or government channels for further instructions.

The testing of the Nuclear Public Alerting System is a requirement under the Provincial Nuclear Emergency Response Plan (PNERP). For additional information, residents can visit durham.ca/NuclearPreparedness or call 1-800-372-1102.
