Durham Region Recognized for Battery Recycling Efforts

Durham Region, in collaboration with Environmental 360 Solutions, has been awarded the 2024 Prestige Public Private Partnership award by the North American Hazardous Materials Management Association. This accolade acknowledges the region's battery recycling program, which has been operational since 2012.

The program has successfully diverted approximately 454,000 kilograms of batteries from landfills. It has also inspired over 60 municipalities in Ontario to initiate similar recycling efforts. In 2013, Durham Region set a Guinness World Record by collecting 5,120 kilograms of batteries in a single day.

Residents of Durham Region can participate in the program through curbside collections held in spring and fall, as well as by utilizing drop-off locations at waste management facilities in Oshawa, Scugog, and Brock. Additional facilities include a Household and Special Waste Depot in Clarington and a private site in Pickering.

The next scheduled curbside battery collection is from April 28 to May 2, 2025. Residents are advised to place sealed battery bags on top of their closed Green Bins for collection during this period.
