Durham Region Police Address Rising Auto Thefts with Project ATTIRE
The Durham Region Police Service (DRPS) has reported a significant rise in vehicle thefts across the region, with a 100% increase from 2021 to 2023. In response, DRPS established a dedicated unit named Project ATTIRE in December 2023 to focus on auto theft investigations and recovery efforts. This initiative is a collaboration with the Équité Association and has received support from the Ontario provincial government.
Since its inception, Project ATTIRE has conducted 865 investigations, resulting in 341 charges against 81 individuals. The project has also noted a concerning trend of recidivism, with 25% of those charged having previous offenses related to failing to comply with release orders or breaching probation.
In 2024, the efforts of Project ATTIRE have led to an 8% decrease in auto thefts and the recovery of over 50% of stolen vehicles. To further combat auto theft, DRPS has launched an awareness campaign featuring a Durham Region Transit bus wrapped with information directing the public to resources on their website for vehicle protection tips.
