Durham Region Opens Winter Warming Center in Clarington
The Regional Municipality of Durham has announced a Winter Warming Plan to assist unsheltered residents during the cold months. The plan involves the use of a former tourism office located at 181 Liberty Street South in Clarington as a temporary warming center. This facility will operate from November 2024 to April 2025.
The initiative is part of Durham Region's efforts to address homelessness and provide shelter during extreme cold weather. The Regional Municipality of Durham is responsible for managing the warming center, which will offer a safe space for individuals without permanent housing.
The Clarington Council has approved a short-term lease of the facility to the Regional Municipality for a nominal rent. The council has also requested that the Regional Municipality engage with local businesses, residents, and relevant agencies to ensure they are informed about the warming center and its operations.
During Cold Weather Alerts, emergency shelters will expand their services by adding mats and cots, and utilizing hotel space as needed. Shelters will remain open during the day to provide continuous support. For more information on cold weather hazards and to receive cold alert notifications, residents can visit the Durham Region Health Department's website.
