Durham Region Observes Circular Economy Month in October
The Regional Municipality of Durham is observing Circular Economy Month throughout October. This initiative extends Waste Reduction Week in Canada into a full month aimed at educating residents about the circular economy and its benefits.
Daily Themes for Waste Reduction Week (October 21-27):
- Monday, October 21 – Repair Monday
- Tuesday, October 22 – Textile Tuesday
- Wednesday, October 23 – E-Waste Wednesday
- Thursday, October 24 – Plastic Thursday
- Friday, October 25 – Food Waste Friday
- Saturday, October 26 – Sharing Economy Saturday
- Sunday, October 27 – Swap Sunday
The month will focus on raising awareness about the circular economy, which emphasizes sustainable practices that prioritize environmental protection and resource management. Throughout the year, Durham Region supports waste reduction efforts by promoting the five “Rs”: Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Recover. This includes collecting materials like textiles and electronic waste at Waste Management facilities and organizing special pick-ups.
Durham Region's 2022 to 2040 Long-term Waste Management Plan aims to rethink and reduce waste, manage resources effectively, and explore energy recovery from waste. For more information about waste reduction initiatives in Durham Region, residents can visit durham.ca/Waste.
