Durham Region Launches Video Series on Homelessness
The Region of Durham has launched a video series titled "Stories of Resilience" to coincide with World Homeless Day on October 10. The series aims to highlight the experiences of individuals facing homelessness in the area. It includes personal stories from people like Camilla, who became homeless due to illness, and Tiffany, who left her home to escape domestic violence.
The video series is available on YouTube and seeks to address the stigma associated with homelessness by sharing real-life experiences and the support systems available. As part of the World Homeless Day observance, a flag will be raised at the Regional Headquarters in Whitby.
According to the Region's By-Name List, there are currently 786 individuals experiencing homelessness in Durham as of August 2024. This list includes those who have consented to receive support services. The Region of Durham coordinates the local Homelessness Support System, providing shelter and a housing-first approach to help individuals transition to stable housing.
John Henry, Regional Chair and CEO, emphasized the Region's commitment to supporting vulnerable residents in securing necessary resources. The initiative is part of the Region's broader efforts to address homelessness across local municipalities.
