Municipalities across Durham Region have received feedback regarding a shortage of accessible taxis, which can hinder travel for individuals needing to attend medical appointments or visit family and friends. The Region of Durham aims to ensure accessible services for all residents and visitors. All Durham Region Transit (DRT) buses are equipped with low floors and front ramps to accommodate customers using mobility devices, in compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). However, DRT bus services may not meet the needs of everyone, and accessible taxis are proposed as a more suitable option in certain situations.

Local Accessibility Coordinators from the Region and the eight area municipalities are collaborating to explore solutions. To gather specific community input, an accessible taxi survey has been initiated.

Survey Details:

  • Open Period: September 10 through October 31, 2024.
  • Access: The survey is available online at durham.ca/AccessibleTaxiSurvey. It can also be requested in various formats via email.
  • Physical Copies: Residents can obtain a copy of the survey from local libraries and recreation centers.

The feedback collected will assist in identifying service gaps and shaping potential solutions for accessible taxi services in the region.
