Durham Region Health Department's Beach Monitoring Program

The Durham Region Health Department monitors 14 public beaches throughout the region from early June until the end of August. During the beach monitoring season, information notices about blue-green algae are posted at all public beaches. If blue-green algae are confirmed at these beaches, advisory signs indicating their presence will also be posted. The program does not cover all areas where lake water is accessible or privately owned waterfront properties, but blue-green algae may still be present in these areas, and visitors are advised to exercise caution. The Health Department has been alerted to the presence of blue-green algae in Lake Scugog, and advisory signs will be posted at Kinsmen Beach as a precaution, despite no current evidence of blue-green algae at that location. Residents are advised not to enter the water if they observe algae mats that may be blue-green, olive-green, or red, as some can produce toxins harmful to humans and pets. Additionally, the public is reminded not to use the lake as a source of drinking water.
