Durham Region Collects Over 4,000 Pounds of Food for Local Banks
The municipalities in Durham Region have collectively gathered 4,239 pounds of food and raised $5,051 through online donations. These contributions are intended to support local food banks and hunger relief programs, including Feed the Need in Durham. The donations are estimated to provide the equivalent of 10,102 meals.
Feed the Need in Durham, a key organization in distributing food to local food banks, has reported an increase in service demand, averaging 22,000 visits per month. The region's population is projected to grow by nearly 40% by 2046, which is faster than the Ontario average, potentially increasing the demand for food bank services.
Residents are encouraged to continue supporting local hunger relief efforts by donating to Feed the Need in Durham or other local food banks. A list of most needed items is available on the Feed the Need in Durham website.
The initiative is part of the efforts during Hunger Action Month, aimed at raising awareness and support for those facing food insecurity in the community.
