Durham Police Report Third Week Festive RIDE Results

The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) has completed the third week of its 2024 Festive RIDE program. During this period, over 4,000 vehicles were stopped, resulting in 16 impaired driving charges. The initiative, aimed at reducing impaired driving, saw a significant increase in roadside breath tests and Highway Traffic Act charges compared to the same period last year.

Key statistics from the third week include:

  • 4,011 vehicles stopped (compared to 2,890 in 2023)

  • 174 roadside breath tests conducted (up from 75 in 2023)

  • 13 drivers received a '3 Day Suspension' for a 'WARN' result

  • 3 novice drivers faced licence suspensions

  • 16 individuals charged with impaired driving offences

  • 245 Highway Traffic Act charges laid

  • 6 drug-related charges

The DRPS noted that the average blood alcohol concentration of those charged was 154 mg per 100 mL, nearly double the legal limit. This figure, while slightly lower than last year's average, remains concerning. The police emphasized the importance of community involvement in reporting suspected impaired drivers.

The Festive RIDE program continues to collaborate with organizations such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to enhance enforcement and educational efforts across the region.
