Durham Police Report Increased Impaired Driving Charges in Festive RIDE Program

The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) has completed the second week of its 2024 Festive RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) program. During this period, officers stopped 2,162 vehicles and charged 17 drivers with impaired driving offenses.

The RIDE program, conducted across the Region of Durham, resulted in the following outcomes:

  • 232 individuals were subjected to roadside breath tests.

  • 18 drivers received three-day suspensions for registering a 'WARN' on breath tests.

  • One novice driver received a license suspension.

  • 17 individuals were charged with drinking and driving offenses.

  • Five other Criminal Code charges were laid.

  • 238 Highway Traffic Act offenses were recorded.

  • Two drug offenses were identified.

The DRPS noted a 30% increase in impaired-related arrests compared to the same period in 2023. The program also involved collaboration with the Ministry of Transportation to conduct mandatory alcohol screening for commercial vehicles entering the Whitby Truck Inspection Station.

The DRPS encourages residents to report suspected impaired drivers by noting the vehicle's make, model, and license plate, as well as the direction of travel, and calling 911.
